Feeling S.A.D.?
“Seasonal Affective Disorder” is a type of Winter depression which affects an estimated half a million people every Winter between September and April and, in particular, during December, January and February.
It is caused by a biochemical imbalance in the brain due to the shortening of daylight hours and the lack of sunlight in winter. For many people SAD is a mild, but debilitating, condition causing some discomfort and is dismissed as 'Winter blues'. For others it is a seriously disabling illness, preventing them from functioning normally. A small number of sufferers may go on to develop serious depression. What are the symptoms and what can be done to help?
The symptoms of SAD include depression; desire to oversleep and disturbed, un-refreshing sleep; fatigue; over eating; tension and anxiety; irritability and aversion to social contact; loss of libido and mood swings. Those affected suffer with a weakened immune system during winter and are more vulnerable to colds and infections.
Conventional medical treatment is with anti-depressant drugs which can have many unwanted side effects. Many people visit a Homeopath to help with symptoms of SAD because treatment is individualized to you personally.
